Acidity — burning in the chest or upper abdomen after meals, belching, sour taste in the mouth — is among the most common complaints at our clinic. The majority of patients arriving for this have been on omeprazole or pantoprazole (PPIs) for months to years. Some have been on antacids (gelusil, digene) daily for even longer. Many say "it used to work better before."
What PPIs Do to Your Stomach Over Time
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole work by blocking acid production in the stomach. They are effective and appropriate for specific conditions — GERD, peptic ulcers, H. pylori treatment. But for general acidity related to dietary habits, they treat the symptom while the cause (diet, lifestyle, stress) continues unchanged. Long-term PPI use can reduce B12 absorption, affect magnesium levels, and — importantly — cause acid rebound when stopped. Some patients find stopping PPIs triggers worse acidity than they had originally, trapping them on the medication.
The Dietary Causes Most Patients Underestimate
In the North Karnataka diet, common acidity triggers are: large portions of oil-heavy curries, eating very late dinners (after 9 PM is common), strong filter coffee on an empty stomach (extremely common in this region), no breakfast or irregular meals, and lying down immediately after eating. Changing these habits has more impact on acidity than any medicine — but it requires consistent effort rather than just swallowing a tablet.
What a Better Approach Looks Like
Address dietary triggers first. Smaller meals, earlier dinner, coffee only after a solid meal, at least 2-3 hours gap before sleeping. If PPI or antacid use has become chronic, a gradual taper — not abrupt stopping — under medical guidance is the appropriate way to reduce dependency. Homeopathic treatment during this period can support the gastric lining, reduce symptoms, and address the stress component (stress markedly worsens acidity). For persistent severe acidity, endoscopy to rule out GERD, gastritis, or peptic ulcer is appropriate before extended treatment.
ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥವೇನು
Acidity that has been present for years and requires daily medication deserves proper investigation, not indefinite antacid prescriptions. At Tulsi Homeo in Belgavi, we work on reducing medication dependency alongside dietary guidance, and we recommend endoscopy referral when symptoms suggest a structural cause that needs ruling out.
ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಕೇಳುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು
Is it dangerous to stop omeprazole suddenly?
Not dangerous, but uncomfortable. Acid rebound — where acid secretion spikes after stopping PPIs — causes worse acidity for 1-2 weeks. A gradual taper over 4-6 weeks reduces this. Never stop without a plan.
Does acidity always mean too much acid?
Not necessarily. Some GERD is caused by a weakened lower esophageal sphincter allowing normal acid to reflux. Stress, obesity, and pregnancy also cause reflux without excess acid. Treatment therefore is not always about reducing acid.
Is cold milk helpful for acidity?
Cold milk provides temporary relief by neutralising acid briefly, but dairy fat can increase acid production afterward. For some people it helps; for others it worsens. It is not a reliable long-term solution.
