Belagavi temperatures from April to June consistently reach 35-38°C. Construction workers, farmers doing fieldwork during the hot season, auto-rickshaw drivers sitting in the sun, and children playing outdoors are all significantly dehydrated by midday. We see kidney stone attacks increase sharply from April onwards — a pattern we observe every year.
The Dehydration-Stone Connection
Kidney stones form when urine becomes too concentrated — when minerals crystallise because there is not enough water to keep them dissolved. In summer heat, people lose large amounts of water through sweat without always replacing it adequately. The body maintains blood pressure by concentrating urine, which directly raises stone risk. People who have had a stone before are at significantly higher risk of recurrence during periods of dehydration — their kidneys are already predisposed.
Who Is Most At Risk in Our Region
The highest-risk groups we see: farmers doing active summer fieldwork (sugarcane irrigation in Belagavi belt, sunflower in Bijapur, cotton in Raichur — all summer crops requiring field presence); construction and brick kiln workers exposed to direct sun; those drinking tea or coffee instead of water (common among older working-age men); and people with a previous stone history who have not maintained hydration habits. People already prone to stone formation due to metabolic factors are particularly vulnerable.
Summer Stone Prevention: Practical and Specific
Drink 3-4 litres of plain water daily from March to June. Not tea, not coffee, not juice — water. Start drinking before thirst, because thirst is a late sign of dehydration. Workers should carry water containers and drink every 30-40 minutes during outdoor work. Coconut water or ORS (oral rehydration solution) helps replace electrolytes lost through sweating, not just water. Monitor urine colour: pale yellow is safe; dark yellow or amber means drink more now. If you have had a stone before, discuss preventive treatment with your doctor before summer.
ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥವೇನು
Prevention of summer kidney stones requires active effort, not just awareness. At Tulsi Homeo in Belgavi, we provide preventive consultations for patients with stone history before the summer season and discuss dietary and hydration strategies specific to their stone type and occupation.
ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಕೇಳುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು
Can I drink tender coconut water to prevent stones?
Tender coconut water is beneficial — it is naturally hydrating, rich in potassium (which can help reduce stone risk), and generally well-tolerated. However, it should not replace plain water. Drink both. Those with kidney disease or diabetes should check with a doctor before drinking large quantities.
Is coffee bad for kidney stones?
Moderate coffee consumption (1-2 cups daily) is actually associated with reduced stone risk in some studies, likely due to the fluid intake and diuretic effect. However, using coffee as your primary fluid while not drinking enough water is problematic. Net fluid intake is what matters most.
Should I avoid sunlight to prevent stones?
No. Avoiding sunlight to prevent stones is not necessary or practical. What you need is to replace the fluid lost through sweating in the sun. Wear light clothing, work during cooler morning hours where possible, and drink water consistently throughout the day.
