Tonsil removal (tonsillectomy) is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in children. We see parents in our clinic who have been told their child needs the surgery after 3-4 bouts of tonsillitis in a year. The decision deserves more careful consideration than a simple episode count.

When Surgery Is Actually Recommended (Internationally)

The standard medical guideline (Paradise criteria) recommends considering tonsillectomy when a child has 7 or more tonsillitis episodes in one year, 5 episodes per year for two consecutive years, or 3 episodes per year for three years — AND each episode is properly documented with fever, positive throat culture or rapid strep test, and antibiotic treatment. Children meeting these criteria genuinely benefit from surgery. Children who had 3-4 self-limiting sore throats in a year are typically not clear candidates.

Other Situations Where Surgery Is Warranted

Tonsillectomy is also appropriate when: tonsils are so large they cause obstructive sleep apnea (the child stops breathing briefly during sleep, snores heavily, or has restless sleep); there are repeated peritonsillar abscesses; or there is suspected tonsil tumour. Sleep apnea from enlarged tonsils is a clearer surgical indication than infection frequency alone.

What Homeopathy Can Offer for Recurrent Cases

For children who have frequent tonsillitis but do not clearly meet surgical criteria, constitutional homeopathic treatment can reduce episode frequency and severity over 6-12 months. The aim is improving immune response so tonsils fulfil their intended function (immune defence) without repeatedly getting infected. This approach buys time while the child's immunity matures — most children's tonsil problems naturally reduce after age 8-10. If episodes continue at high frequency despite treatment, surgical reassessment is appropriate.

ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಇದರ ಅರ್ಥವೇನು

Before agreeing to tonsillectomy for your child, ask the ENT specialist how many confirmed bacterial episodes they have had, whether sleep apnea has been assessed, and whether the child meets formal surgical criteria. Get a second opinion if advised surgery after just 3-4 episodes. At Tulsi Homeo in Belgavi, we help parents navigate this decision honestly and support children with constitutional treatment where surgery is not clearly warranted.

ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ಕೇಳುವ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳು

Does removing tonsils weaken immunity?

Not significantly. Tonsils are part of the immune system, but other lymphoid tissue compensates after removal. The evidence does not show increased susceptibility to serious infection after tonsillectomy in appropriately selected patients.

Can my child have only the adenoids removed?

Yes. Adenoids are separate from tonsils, though they are often removed together when both are enlarged. Adenoidectomy alone (without tonsillectomy) is appropriate when adenoids are causing nasal blockage or ear problems but tonsils are not a significant issue.

What age is tonsillectomy safest?

Tonsillectomy is generally considered safer and easier to recover from after age 3. Young children have a higher complication risk from surgery and anaesthesia. For children under 3 with tonsil problems, the threshold for surgery is higher.
